power to be as selective as they might at any time

choose in the admission :of students, or would the fact

there is a University of Maryland make it necessary that

the power be not quite that extensive?

DR. KUHN: Actually, the expectations of the

people who have been elected in recent years in the
|

|
legislature and the Governor and the people of Maryland
|

|
have placed already by custom the authority to set the
|
12
|
standards for admission of students and, while it has
|
13
|
been certainly a matter of public concern and great
|
14
|
debate, it has not been seriously questioned in recent
|
15
|
years and I believe, actually -- Dr. Bard, you could
|
16
|
speak on this from another point of view, but I believe
|
17
|
this is an area that fortunately, by the opinion of
|
18
|
enlightened people of all the citizenry has moved over
|
19
|
to control the boards and I think this has happened.

Now, the University of Maryland has not

attempted to be terribly selective. I mean, move way up
