1876.] OF THE SENATE. 907
Gorman, Steiner,
Hepbron, Suit,
Humphreys, Walsh—21.
Joyce,
NEGATIVE—None.
Mr. Ford, from Select Committee, reported favorably,
House bill entitled an Act to provide for the Protection of
Oyster interest in Queen Anne's county.
Which was read the second time.
Mr. Gorman submitted the following:
WHEREAS, The Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate has been
called upon to, and has performed much additional and ex-
tra service in the summoning of witnesses for Committees of in-
vestigation, and in cases of contested elections.
And whereas, It heretofore has been the practice in the
Senate to pay him ten dollars per day.
And whereas, It seems not to have been contemplated,
when his per diem was fixed, at this Session at five dollars,
that such extraordinary duties were to be imposed upon
him.
And whereas, He ought to be compensated for such extra
duties; therefore it is
Ordered by the Senate, That the Sergeant-at-Arms is enti-
tled, as full compensation for his duties, including his ser-
vice in summoning witnesses, to the sum of ten dollars per
day, commencing at the beginning of the Session, and the
Chairman of the Committee on Claims of the House, is hereby
requested to pay him for the Session a der diem of ten dol-
lars.
Which was adopted by yeas and nays as follows:
