CHAPTER 738.
(House Bill 384)
AN ACT to add a new section to Article 27 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1939 Edition), title "Crimes and Pun-
ishments", said new section to be known as Section 509A,
to follow immediately after Section 509 of said Article and
to be under new sub-title "Passenger Boats", relating to
the use of ship-to-shore telephones and other such devices
on certain boats or vessels in this State.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That a new section be and it is hereby added to Article
27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1939 Edition), title
"Crimes and Punishments", said new section to be known as
Section 509A, to follow immediately after Section 509 of said
Article and to be under new sub-title "Passenger Boats", and.
to read as follows:
PASSENGER BOATS
509A. Every boat or vessel, of whatever description, oper-
ating upon the waters of this State and carrying in addition
to the crew and employees thereof a total of twenty-five (25)
or more paying or guest passengers, shall be equipped with a
ship-to-shore telephone or with such other mechanical device
or devices which shall enable the crew and employees thereof
under all reasonable conditions and whenever an emergency
may so require, to establish such contact with points or per-
sons on shore as may be necessary to seek assistance. The
captain, master or owner of any such boat or vessel which
begins any such trip on waters of this State without being so
equipped shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon
conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine of not more than
One Hundred Dollars ($100.00). Provided, that nothing in
this section shall be construed as extending or applying to
boats or vessels in interstate or foreign commerce.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1947.
