80 State Papers and Addresses

So today, in congratulating the officials and staff of the University on
this excellent addition to their physical facilities, and in voicing, as I am sure
I do, the appreciation of those engaged in the poultry industry for this new
instrument of progress in their field of endeavor, I wish to say just a word
on behalf of the men and women engaged in these unpublicized but highly
important activities of research and investigation. As a people, we live so
much better, we enjoy so many things we otherwise would not have, we are
spared so many annoyances and evils because of the results' achieved by the
fact-finding agencies attached to the University, that it is only fair on an
occasion like this to pay some little tribute to those who, by the efficient per-
formance of the tasks assigned them, are responsible for adding much to the
enjoyment of life, and much to the advancement of science and industry along
many lines.

In conclusion, let me say again that Maryland is proud to have the op-
portunity to extend the hand of welcome to our visitors from other lands. It
is my sincere hope that they will find much to interest them here among us
today, and that they may carry away with them, to be recalled often in the
years to come, pleasant memories of happy hours spent with us of Maryland
here at College Park.

MARYLAND DAY AT THE WORLD'S FAIR

July 28, 1939
New York, N. Y.

TODAY, Maryland pays her respects to the New York World's Fair—and
to the people of the great Commonwealth that conceived and created this
inspiring preview, so to speak, of "The World of Tomorrow. " We are here
at the invitation of President Grover A. Whalen and the Fair authorities to
exchange greetings and felicitations and to see for ourselves the wonders as-
sembled here from all parts of the world for our enlightment and inspiration.

We already have seen enough to convince us that here is no ordinary
world exhibit, but a vibrant, pulsating parade of scientific progress that pre-
sents to us in manner too dramatic to be ignored, too vivid ever to be forgotten,
the salient points of world advancement that will make for improved living
the world over in the years that are ahead. Maryland's contribution, thanks
to the forethought of our Legislature and to the untiring work of Dr. Hugh
H. Young and his associates on the Commission, tells aptly and colorfully the
story of Maryland's achievements, of Maryland's culture, and of her mode of
living. We are happy to be a part of this world-wide exhibit.

It is a happy privilege for me, as Chief Executive of one of the twelve
States that joined with New York to found this new land of Democratic tradi-
tions, to have the opportunity of expressing Maryland's feelings on this
ceremonious occasion. Our two States have so much in common in the way of
historical associations that it seems only fitting and proper that here at this
great World's Fair, we are called upon to celebrate, on the soil of New York,
a day dedicated to Maryland.
