744 State Papers and Addresses

Never in the entire history of our Country has there been greater need
for patrotic rededication than faces us today. Literally, America and the
United Nations are fighting against staggering odds. On all the continents
and on each of the seven seas, the mightiest, most brutal military machines
the world has ever known have put to challenge every right and privilege,
we have heretofore known. Their threat covers our way of life in all its
phases - economic, political, social and religious.

Under such a threat to the security of our Nation, every other con-
sideration must be laid aside except that which will make for a stronger
National unity and a more concerted National effort. Questions of racial
origin, of religion and of class never had a place in America, but certainly
deserves no thought today when the energies of every one of our citizens is
needed for defens.

To every American citizen our Commander-in-chief has thrown down the
guage of true Americanism. Rightly has it been pointed out that we cannot
accept our Country's gifts without shouldering its responsibilities, without
pledging ourselves to carry on and to sustain, at whatever cost may be
entailed, the heritage of freedom and liberty that has been entrusted to our
care.

We hope that final Victory will come soon. We cannot, however, allow
our hopes to stop our hands. Until Hitler is crushed beyond retrieve, until
the war-lords of Japan, with their armies stalled, their Navy and flying
forces beaten into destruction, realize the hopelessness of their battle for
supremacy in the Far East, until that day, we must continually step up our
war effort, we must build MORE ships, MORE planes, MORE guns; we must
leave undone no single thing that could possibly contribute to overwhelming
and final United Nations Victory.

We have but one job to do now, to WIN THIS WAR, and we cannot
falter in the doing.

America and the United Nations can never give up this fight until
Germany and Japan have been beaten, until Freedom has been restored
throughout the world. One hundred and thirty-million Americans are united
today with 800, 000, 000 people of the United Nations, in the patriotic de-
termination to win through to Victory, no matter what the cost. You are
doing your part and a grateful people will never forget it.
