of Governor Herbert R. O'Conor 679
of the individual and the principles of liberty. The unity of spirit in America
today is so definite and abiding that our people need but be informed as to
their duty in order to perform it. We are united in spirit and we are now engaged
in translating this unity of spirit into unity of action.
The present threat to our Democratic way of life is the greatest we have
ever faced in all the years of our National existence. It is evident, therefore,
that the times-call for a National unity far-exceeding that ordinarily achieved
by free people.
The dictators have declared that our people are too easy-going and that we
can never compete in war with the soulless war machine they have so ruthlessly
perfected. You know that such a philosophy is false, and that we can demon-
strate convincingly that the spirit of free men and free women can rise to
mightier heights than even the driven slaves of the militarists can achieve.
To do this we must attain to uncharted heights of National unity. We
must work and we must sacrifice with an unconquerable spirit. Only in this
manner can we gain the overwhelming victory that must be won. When it is
won, there will be an indication of Democracy's ideals. That it will be won, I
feel absolutely sure, because America's cause is just and our people, now
brought to the realization of our plight, are determined to do everything
rather than to deprive their children and future generations of the dignity and
the benefit of American citizenship.
