606 State Papers and Addresses
will be necessary, perhaps tremendous adjustments, in on our National and indi-
vidual living. As Americans all, however, who realize truly what America
has meant to us, and what it will mean to our children and their children, we
must buckle down to winning this war just as quickly and thoroughly as it is
possible to do so.
We will give our great President, our Army and Navy, planes and ships,
tanks and guns, without stint or limit. We will send our fighting men wherever
the forces of aggression raise their head. We won't cease in our endeavor until
the issue is settled!, finally, beyond any possibility of recurrence. Our homes,
our free way of living, our honor and our lives are at stake. But we are un-
afraid.
Merging with the hallowed memories of Valley Forge and the other shrines
of American Democracy, the remembrance of Wake Island, Pearl Harbor, the
Philippines, will lift us to unsealed heights of National unity and accomplish-
ment.
With hearts dedicated to the ideals of peace and justice for all mankind
we can lift our eyes, unashamed, in this our time of trial, to the Omnipotent
Being who disposes all our efforts, and say to Him, in the words of that inspir-
ing hymn, America:
"Protect us by thy might,
Great God our King !"
