576 State Papers and Addresses

Under such conditions it is remarkable that we were able to make as much
progress as we did, that we would arrive at such an advanced state of prepara-
tion throughout the 23 counties as had been achieved when the long-dreaded
onslaught materialized at Hawaii.

In the Pacific Ocean two weeks ago death came to some of our Maryland
sons who were the targets for the treacherous assaults of the Japanese. We
will be untrue to the memories of the Maryland boys who made the supreme
sacrifices last week if we do not use this opportunity to prepare for defense
and to avenge their deaths.

In this war to turn back invasion, we at home shall be facing the invader,
be hearing the thunder of his bombing, be receiving his fiercest blows.

Now is the time to prove that Democracy can wage war as successfully as
it can survive peace.

We, as a Nation, are fighting today, this very hour, for our national ex-
istence. We must conquer or perish.

All our energy, all of the resources, all of the treasure of this Country must
be dedicated to the supreme task of defending our Nation. With God's help,
we shall continue to fight until victory crowns our banners—whatever be the
cost, in blood, in treasure, in tears—that liberty may retain its habitation
among the nations, and that freedom shall not perish from the earth!

I am now giving you a ten second standby, your "blackout" signal is about
to sound.
