of Governor Herbert R. O'Conor 373

Catholics, American Holy Name men never have been found, and never will
be found aligned with those forces that seek to undermine and destroy America's
institutions. Truly can we say that never have our parochial schools, or our
many splendid institutions of high learning, been accused of teaching any-
thing1 but love of country, and appreciation of our opportunities and liberties.
All these new ideologies, that threaten ruin to the world, are the very antithesis
of Catholic doctrines and Catholic teachings.

As our present Vicar of Christ on Earth, Pope Pius XII, said in his First
Encyclical, on October 20, 1939: "The, Church enjoins and preaches that obedi-
ence and respect should be paid to earthly powers, which derive from God their
high mission.... It is not likely that she, who has given civilization to so many
races and peoples, should be guilty of. having retarded the course of human
' progress.... The history of the last nineteen centuries well illustrates the
truth of what Holy Scripture says, that the man who resists God can have no
peace. Christ only is that corner-stone upon which civil society, like the life
of the individual man, must rest, if it will rest secure. "

Brought up on such wholesome doctrines as that laid down by Pope Pius
XII, and renewed in spirit by regular adherence to the practice of your faith,
it is unthinkable that men such as are here assembled should ever even give a
hearing to those unhealthy governmental theories that are being spread sur-
reptitiously in our very midst. Rather, your State and. Nation can look to you
with entire confidence, as a bulwark against which such doctrines will dash in
vain.

In participating in Holy Communion Services with large groups of our
Police and Fire Departments, I, as a public official, have come away with the
distinct impression that the servicemen were better Americans as the result
of their renewal of faith. They had been revitalized in the truths and funda-
mental principles upon which our governmental system was founded.

The American System of Government, with its recognition of the individual
as the sole consideration of government, is the truest realization of an ideal of
government that exists in the world today. It is a wonderful thing to be as
privileged, in a national sense as we are. It must not be forgotten, however,
that every privilege enjoyed entails a corresponding responsibility.

Today, in the face of the dangers that threaten our Country from without,
and with full knowledge of the forces working to undermine our Nation from
within, now as never before it is the duty of every American to give deep and
solemn thought to the obligations of American citizenship.

Today, there is no room in this Country for petty divisions of thought
because of political, racial or other causes. As Americans, all, we must stand
in defense of those honored privileges which are the right of every person
living under the Stars and Stripes. But let us not stop there. If persons
enjoying such rights, nevertheless persist in seeking to undermine the basic
institutions of our Country, demand that they be sent back from where they
have come; or, if having been born in this Country, they show their ingratitude
by subversive activities, let them be told to go to the Country whose doctrines
and principles they advocate so zealously.

Undoubtedly, you men have been thrilled to the very core of your being, to
