of Governor Herbert R. O'Conor 233

We love America and revere the Stars and Stripes because they guarantee
all that we hold dear in life. We are pround to be called Americans because
the whole world knows that citizenship here is the badge of respect for other
rights, brotherly love and decency in living. This Country has not been greedy
for the wealth or possessions of other nations and has been the haven of refuge
for the oppressed from distant lands.

But this brings a thought to mind as to our obligations. In these difficult
times, with so many subversive forces striving for their own purposes to
weaken our national unity, and to divert the minds of our people from channels
of patriotism, is is a solemn duty incumbent upon each one of us to accept
the fact that possession of our valued American rights brings with it a duty
that each one of us must accept willingly if America is to weather the present
emergency. It is a duty we have not only to think loyally, to speak loyally,
but to contribute whatever loyal activities are required of us, military or
otherwise.

While the whole story is not available yet, accurate reports that have
come from the conquered nations of Europe prove conclusively that one of
the greatest aids the forces of conquest had in these countries were the dis-
loyal groups planted there in advance for just such purposes when the emerg-
ency should arise. The fifth columnists are examples of this. Not only were
these disloyal groups able to render effective aid to the invading hosts by
destroying communications and interfering with the orderly processes of
government, but over a period of months, and even years, they had been work-
ing to poison the minds of the residents, and, thus, to prepare the way for
easy conquest.

Even now, as we know all too well, such forces are actively at work here
in our own Country. Why it is that some people who enjoy the privileges in
this Country still give first allegiance to some other country is hard for loyal
Americans to understand. If these agitators are dissatisfied with American
Democracy, if they prefer some other form of government, they should not
stay here and poison the wells of American citizenship. Instead of trying to
transform free America into the slave states which they hold in such high
regard, why don't they go back and enjoy, at first-hand, the conditions in the
Dictator-ruled countries?

Why don't we send them back? Most of them, as has been proven time
and again, are disloyal to this Country. The majority of those who are seeking
to create dissension and to prepare the way for possible enemy invasion of
America, are aliens who absolutely fail to understand and appreciate the
American concepts of government. Our Country has been extremely tolerant
with such people, during years of peace when their efforts could obviously
come to naught. Now, however, with admitted dangers from such activities
forming a serious threat to our national future, you will agree that our govern-
ment should be much more ready to deport such people from our midst.

In viewing such demonstrations as this of tonight, the consoling thought
comes to us now, at last, we are beginning to be prepared adequately to safe-
guard those material and spiritual blessings with which America has been
endowed to a far greater extent than any other nation upon the globe. 'N6t
only, as you know, has this Country now embarked on a program in the manner
of increased armaments, a much larger navy and the tremendous air force that
