Mr. Goslin, from Committee on Ways and Means,
reported favorably,
Senate bill, File No. 182, entitled "An Act to repeal
and re-enact with amendments, section 1 of chapter
175 of the Acts of 1888, providing for the keeping and
guarding of the public buildings and grounds in the
city of Annapolie and the movable property of the
State therein."
Which was read the second time.

JOINT RESOLUTION.
Joint Resolution, Providing for a suitable inscrip-
tion to be placed on the pedestal of the bronze statue
on the State House Hill erected to Roger Brooke
Taney, Chief Justice of the United States.
Whereas, Roger Brooke Taney, a distinguished son
of Maryland, a profound lawyer and great statesman,
rendered distinguished public services to the State
and nation, having successively filled the offices of
Attorney-General of the State of Maryland, and At-
torney-General of the United States of America; and
Whereas, The said Roger Brooke Taney, was on the
15th day of March, 1886, commissioned as Chief Jus-
tice of the Supreme Court of the United States of
America, which office he filled with great distinction
and marked ability until the time of his death, which
occurred on the 12th day of October, in the year 1864;
and
Whereas, The State of Maryland in recognition of
his great public service has caused to be erected upon
the State House Hill, Annapolis, Maryland, a bronze
statue upon a granite pedestal, upon which some suit-
able inscription should be placed.
Resolved, That the Superintendent of Public Build-
ings be, and he is hereby authorized and directed, to
cause to be inscribed by some skilled artisan upon
the front of said granite pedestal, the following:
' 'Roger Brooke Taney,
Chief Justice of the United States of America,
Born March 17th, 1777.
Commissioned Chief Justice, March 15th, 1836,
Died October 12th, 1864."
