                           CHAPTER 324.

AN ACT to incorporate a company for constructing a
     a Bridge or Bridges across the Chesapeake and Ohio
     Canal and the Potomac river, at or near Williamsport,
     in Washington county.

27, 1853.
     SECTION 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland,
That John Wolf, George Cushwa,
Wilfred D. McCardle, Edward M. Mealey and George
Strause, be, and they are hereby appointed commissioners
for the purposes hereinafter mentioned, with power to
supply any vacancy that may occur by death, resignation
or otherwise, that is to say, they, or a majority of
them, after twenty days notice in one or more newspapers
published in Williamsport or Hagerstown, in
Washington county, Maryland, and in one or more
newspapers published at Martinsburg, Berkley county,
Virginia, shall, or may open a book or books, at such
place or places as they may designate, for raising subscriptions
to construct a bridge or bridges at or near
Williamsport, Washington county, across the Potomac
river and the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, and thereupon
they shall proceed to receive subscriptions for the
capital stock of the said company, which is hereby
limited at one hundred thousand dollars, to be divided
into five thousand shares of twenty dollars each, and
the said book or books shall be kept open for six consecutive
days, and in case of an excess of subscription
the commissioners shall deduct from the largest in such
manner that no one shall be reduced while any remains
larger; and if the whole number of shares shall not
have been subscribed for within that time, the said commissioners,
or a majority of them, shall give notice as
aforesaid, of the time and place or places when and
where they will receive subscriptions for the remaining
shares.

     SEC. 2.  And be it enacted, That every person at
the time of subscribing, shall pay to the attending commissioner
or commissioners five dollars for every share
by him or her subscribed for, out of which shall be
defrayed the expenses for taking such subscriptions and
other incidental charges, and the remainder shall be
paid over to the treasurer of the corporation as soon as
the same shall be organized and the officers chosen as
hereinafter mentioned.

     SEC. 3.  And be it enacted, That as soon as
two thousand shares been subscribed, the said
commissioners, or a majority of them, shall call a
