CHAPTER 233.
AN ACT to amend an act passed at December session
eighteen hundred and thirty-eight, chapter two hundred
and eight, entitled, an act to authorise the Mayor
and City Council of Baltimore, to levy hereafter upon
the assessable property within the City of Baltimore,
a direct tax not exceeding the sum of three hundred
and fifty thousand dollars, with full power by ordinance
to collect the same, so as to authorise the Mayor
and City Council to increase the direct tax to an
amount not exceeding five hundred thousand dollars.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted
by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the mayor and city council of Baltimore,
be and they are hereby authorised to levy hereafter
upon the assessable property within the city of Baltimore
by direct tax, a sum not exceeding five hundred thousand
dollars annually, instead of a sum not exceeding three
hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually, to which
they are restricted, in and by the act of the General Assembly
of Maryland, passed at December session eighteen
hundred and thirty-eight, chapter two hundred and eight,
and the said mayor and city council of Baltimore, are
hereby vested with full power and authority to provide
by ordinance for the collection of the same, for the purpose
of defraying the expenses of the corporation, over
and exclusive of all expenses charges and sums of money,
which they are or shall be required by law to levy and
collect for other purposes.
