1904.] OF THE SENATE. 55
structed in a most thorough and substantial manner,
being fire, proof throughout, and consists of a base-
ment and two upper stories.
In the basement are located store rooms. On the
first floor are located the offices of the Comptroller,
Treasurer, Tax Commissioner, the Land Office and the
office of the Commander of the State Fishery Force.
On the second floor is located the Court of Appeals,
with ample accommodations for its various depart-
ments, connecting with the Lawyers' retiring room,
Law library and State library.
The interior of the public space of the building is
finished in white marble. The marble columns which
have been placed around the lobby, forming the en-
trance to the Court of Appeals and the Library were
taken from the rotunda of the old Custom House in
Baltimore, and were presented to the State by the
United States Government.
On the main stairway of the lobby are three large
windows in which are to be placed ornamental leaded
glass, representing in the centre the obverse of the
Great Seal of Caecelius, Baron of Baltimore and first
Lord Proprietary of Maryland, adopted A. D. 1648.
To the left of the centre is represented the reverse of
the Great Seal as used by all the Lords Proprietary of
Maryland, adopted A. D. 1648. To the right of the
centre is represented the Great Seal of Maryland as
restored and adopted by the General Assembly, A. D.
1876.
These representations have been prepared with great
care to insure their absolute historic correctness. We
owe thanks in this work to the co-operation of the
Maryland Historical Society, whose committee has
greatly assisted in obtaining a correct representation
in color of these important subjects.
Apart from the satisfaction resulting from the con-
struction and character of this building, it is especially
gratifying to report that the work has all been com-
pleted within the appropriations made by the Legisla-
ture for its construction and furnishing.
