52 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 6
STATE CAKE OF THE INSANE.
At present there are in Maryland probably some-
thing over 2,000 dependent insane.
The two State hospitals, Springfield and Spring
Grove are able to care for about half that number, and
the balance are in the county almshouses, the jails,
Mt. Hope Asylum and Bay View Asylum. From the
best information that can be had there are probably
about 400 dependent insane supported in county jails
and almshouses, and they are necessarily in a more or
less neglected and miserable condition, with few com-
forts and irregular medical attention. In addition the
counties are supporting them and at the same time
helping through taxation to maintain the two State
hospitals before referred to. It is only reasonable
to hope for a greater percentage of recoveries among
patients in the State hospitals, which are well lighted
well ventilated, scrupulously clean, and where the
patients are constantly under the watchful care of
trained experts.
The present capacity of the State hospitals is taxed
to the extreme, so that extensive additions will be re-
quired to care for all the dependent insane in Mary-
land wno should properly be in one or the other of
these excellent institutions.
THE LIVE STOCK SANITARY BOARD.
The Live Stock Sanitary Board is doing much by its
system of dairy inspection to insure the sanitary con-
dition of stables, clean dairies and healthy cows. No
epidemic diseases have appeared among the live stock
of the State; but the steady systematic inspection of
every dairy and every cow from which milk is sold in
the State is not to be underestimated, and is essential
to the health, since the products of the dairy go into
every household.
THE STATE'S BUILDING OPERATIONS.
The past decade has been marked for the number
and beauty of the public buildings constructed by the
State, and the past four years have been remarkable
in this particular.
