1904.] OF THE SENATE. 49
The survey has been completed during the past year
and a report prepared in which it is shown that many
of the monuments established by Mason and Dixou
more than one hundred years ago were either lost or
out of position, which necessitated the accurate relo-
cation of the entire line and the addition of monuments
at numerous points. These monuments, one mile apart,
have been firmly placed on concrete bases.
The result of this work has an important, and valuable
bearing on the determination of property lines along
the border where many of them have been impossible
of location.
THE MARYLAND-DELAWARE LINE.
The line between Maryland and Delaware, which
constituted part of the work of Mason and Dixon, and
earlier surveyors, also requires attention, many monu-
ments being lost, mutilated or misplaced.
Provision should be made at an early day for the
resurvey and relocation of this line through joint
action with the State of Delaware.
THE PUBLIC HEALTH.
The State Board of Health has been zealous and suc-
cessful in its work. The State has been free from any
thing approaching an epidemic of any prevenlable dis-
ease, and this has been largely due to, the vigilance
and capacity of the members of the State Board of
Health, which shows that they realize fully their use-
ful function is in preventing epidemics as well as sup-
pressing them.
SMALLPOX.
Within the past five years fifty-seven outbreaks of
smallpox have occurred in the counties of Maryland.
Many counties of the State as well as individuals have
been put to enormous expense in suppressing the dis-
ease. The State Board of Health traced the origin of
every outbreak, and in forty-six instances the infec-
tion was from sources beyond the State. Whilst a
majority of the outbreaks were confined to a single
house, which was due to the viligance of the health
