votes of said States were cast for Samuel J. Tilden,
as President, and Thomas A. Hendricks, as Vice-
President, and that by virtue thereof; and of 184
votes cast by other States, of which eight were
cast by the State of Maryland, the said Tilden and
Hendricks were duly elected, and praying said
court to decree accordingly.

Whereas the States of Maryland and Delaware

heretofore chartered the Maryland and Dela-
|
 
|
ware Ship Canal Company for the purpose of
|
 
|
constructing a ship canal across the peninsula
|
 
|
of Maryland and Delaware, connecting the
|
 
|
waters of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays
|
 
|
and opening a direct route to sea for vessels
|
 
|
trading at the ports of Baltimore and the upper
|
Preamble.

part of the Chesapeake Bay, thereby shortening
|
 
|
the distance from Baltimore to European ports
|
 
|
and New York and New England seaboard cities
|
 
|
two hundred and twenty-five miles, and avoid-
|
 
|
ing the dangerous and tedious route doubling

Cape Charles, and by said charter said company
|

is authorized to charge a rate of toll not exceed-
|
 
|
ing twenty cents per ton ;

And whereas this General Assembly approves
