82 MILITIA. [ART. 65

1. ORGANIZATION.
1900, ch 657.

8. The first brigade, already formed and organized out of the
volunteer uniformed organizations now existing, together with
such others as may be provided for by law, and the naval brigade,
as hereinafter constituted, shall constitute the body of organized
militia, and shall be known as the "Maryland National Guard. "
The first brigade shall consist of not more than forty companies,
infantry, cavalry, artillery and signal corps} to contain not more
than twenty-five hundred enlisted men; the naval brigade shall
consist of not more than two battalions, to contain not more than
three hundred and twenty four enlisted men.

9. The "Maryland National Guard, " until otherwise provided
by law, shall consist of the following infantry organizations:
the first regiment, the fourth regiment, the fifth regiment, the
separate colored company, troop A cavalry and the signal corps,
now organized; the said three regiments to be composed of
twelve companies each, and all companies of infantry organized
as above provided for to consist of not less than forty nor more
'than sixty enlisted men; the troop of cavalry to consist of not
less than forty nor more than one hundred men; the signal corps
to consist of one first lieutenant, one second lieutenant, one first
sergeant, three sergeants, four corporals and twenty privates; and
the naval brigade to bo composed of two battalions to be known
as the first and second battalions, each battalion to be composed of
not more than three divisions, to be designated as follows: The
first battalion shall be composed of divisions one, three and five;
the second battalion shall be composed of divisions two, four and
six. Each division of each of said battalions shall consist of not
less than thirty-six petty officers and men as minimum, and fifty-
four petty officers and men as a maximum. The above named
force, except the naval brigade, shall be officered and organized
as prescribed, from time to time, by the regulations of the
United States Army, except that the staff of each regiment shall
consist of the following officers and non commissioned officers,
viz: one surgeon with rank of major; three assistant surgeons
