shall give notice, appoint judges and designate a polling place, as
required in section 51; and the judges shall qualify and certify
the result as provided in the preceding section.

1882, ch. 216.

55. Every person elected a commissioner, before he enters
upon the duties of his office, shall make oath before some justice
of the peace that he will diligently and faithfully, without favor,
partiality or prejudice, perform the duties of a commissioner of
said town; and a certificate of such qualification shall be returned
by the justice to the commissioners and be filed and recorded
among their proceedings.

56. The said commissioners shall meet on the Wednesday en-
duing their election, and as often thereafter as they may determine
by by-law or ordinance, and shall each receive the sum of one

dollar per meeting; provided, that no one of them shall receive
in the aggregate more than twelve dollars per annum as salary.

57. At their first meeting after their election they shall by
ballot select one of their number as mayor, who shall preside at

their meetings and exercise such other functions as may be con-
ferred on him by by-laws or ordinances.

58. The mayor shall see that the ordinances are duly and faith-
fully executed, and shall report annually to the corporation, in
the month of January, the general state of the town, with an
accurate account of the money received and expended, to be pub-
lished in one of the county papers for the information of the
citizens, and shall make such suggestions as in his judgment are
proper for the wise and economical government of the town.

59. The said commissioners, at their first meeting, shall appoint
a town clerk for and during their term, who shall keep a record
of their proceedings in a well bound book, to be provided by them
for that purpose, and to be subject to the inspection of the in-
