8 ALLEGANY COUNTY. [ART. 1.

ALMSHOUSE.

1874, ch 284.

1. The county commissioners of Allegany county, at their first
meeting in each year shall appoint three trustees to have charge
and general supervision of the almshouse of said county; they
shall also, at the same time, appoint a steward and all other
necessary officers for said almshouse; and may purchase all
articles necessary for farming the land thereto attached, and may
levy from time to time on the assessable property of the county
such sums of money as shall be necessary for the support of said
almshouse.

2. Said trustees shall have general supervision over the said
almshouse and grounds thereto attached, and over the inmates
thereof, and may prescribe and designate who shall become
inmates thereof, and the manner of conducting the affairs of
such almshouse, and the officers thereof shall be subject to their
control; and said trustees, at the meeting at which their suc-
cessors are to be appointed shall make a full report of the
general condition of said almshouse to the county commissioners,
and at such time shall also report the amount of money expended
thereon during their term, which report shall be published for
three consecutive weeks in one or more newspapers printed in
the city of Cumberland.

3. Said trustees may bind ont, under indentures of apprentice-
ship, any minor child under their charge, dependent on said
county for support, to some manufacturer, mechanic, handicrafts-
man or other person; provided, however, that if any relative
claiming such child shall give bond, with approved security in
the penalty of at least five hundred dollars, 'for the proper main-
tenance and support of said child until it reaches the age of eigh-
teen years, and the furnishing of reasonable schooling and educa-
tion to such child, then it shall not be so bound out, but shall be
delivered to such relative; said bond shall be given to the State
of Maryland and recorded in the clerk's office of the circuit court
far Allegany county, and suit may be brought thereon by the
county commissioners of said county if" they shall afterwards
