the said treasurer shall act as such, he shall give bond to the State
in such penalty as the commissioners may prescribe, with sureties
to be approved by them, conditioned that he will well and faith,
f ially account for all moneys received by him from the collector
of said corporation, or any other person, for the use of said town,
and will also well and faithfully pay over to the said commis-
sioners, or their order, all sums of money so received by him, and
deliver over the books and papers of his office whenever required
so to do by the said commissioners; and the said bond shall be
recorded in the office of the clerk of the circuit court for Worces-
ter county; and the said commissioners shall allow their treasurer
finch compensation for his services as they may deem reasonable
and just.

255. They shall annually appoint a bailiff of said town, and
prescribe his duties, and as compensation for his services as
bailiff, they may allow him all fines and forfeitures recovered for
the violation of the town ordinances, and no more. The said
bailiff shall enforce the ordinances of said town, and in the exe-
cution of the duties of his office shall have all and the same
powers that constables have in criminal cases; before entering
upon the duties of his office, he shall make oath before one of
the said commissioners that he will faithfully and impartially
execute the duties of his office, according to the best of his skill
and judgment, without favor or prejudice; and shall also give
bond to the State of Maryland in such penalty as the commis-
sioners may direct, and with sureties to be approved by them, for
the faithful performance of his duties as bailiff; and the said
bond shall be recorded in the office of the clerk of the circuit
court for said county; but nothing herein shall be construed to
prevent the bailiff from also acting as lamplighter, and receiving
additional pay in said capacity.

256. They shall erect lamps and lamp posts at such places in
said town as they may think proper, and shall appoint a lamp-
lighter to attend to the lighting and keeping the lamps in order,
and shall allow the said lamplighter for his services the sum of
seventy-five dollars per annum.
