1992 WASHINGTON COUNTY. [AET. 22.

1870, ch. 452

249. If during the year for which they were elected, the bur-
gess, assistant burgess, or any of the commissioners, shall die,
resign, remove from said town, be non compos mentis, or dis-
placed, an election to fill the vacancy shall be held, after ten days'
notice, and all persons entitled to vote at the regular election,
shall be entitled to vote at any special election.

250. The said burgess and assistant burgess and commissioners
shall qualify by making oath, before some justice of the peace
for Washington county, that they will discharge the duties of
their respective offices according to the best of their skill and
judgment, without fear, favor, affection or partiality, a copy of
which oath, with a certificate of the justice administering the
same, shall be entered on the journal of the corporation.

251. The said burgess and commissioners may meet from
time to time, as occasion may require, on the business of the
corporation, not less than once in every three months, and the
burgess shall preside at all meetings, and may give the casting
vote; in his absence the assistant burgess shall preside, under the
same restrictions; but when the burgess is present, the assistant
burgess shall have the same power as a commissioner.

252. They may appoint a clerk and assign his duties, and
allow him such compensation for his services as they may think
proper.

253. The clerk shall enter all ordinances passed by the bur-
gesses, in a book to be kept by him for that purpose, which shall
be open at all times to the inspection of all persons interested;
and copies of all ordinances shall be put up in the most public
places in the town.

and ordinances as from time to time they may deem expedient
for the comfort, health, convenience and prosperity of the town
