cipal and interest, collected, and the amount of money he has
paid out on orders or warrants, drawn as hereinbefore provided,
during the month just passed.

106. All documents, books and papers belonging to the office
of the collector are the property and records of Washington
coupty, and at all times shall be subject to the examination of
the grand jury and county commissioners; and it shall be the
duty of said commissioners, twice in each year, immediately pre-
ceding the commencement of the February terms of the circuit
court, to make, or cause to be made, a thorough examination of
the books, accounts, papers and vouchers of the said collector,
and to make to the said court, during the first week of each of
said terms, a full report of the results of said examination.

107. Upon the expiration of his term of office, the collector
shall deposit with the clerk of the circuit court for Washington
county all books and papers belonging to his office, in which the
accounts of collections and disbursements are made and entered,
and the county commissioners shall allow said collector the orig-
inal cost of said books upon presentation of the bill of purchase
thereof, properly receipted; in the purchase of said books the
collector shall be limited to such books as may be actually re-
quired to faithfully comply with this section.

108. It shall not be lawful for the said collector to retain for
his own salary any part of the principal or interest of the taxes
by him collected, other than such sum as the county commission-
ers shall designate, upon the receipt of the statement hereinbefore
directed to be made monthly to them by the collector; and it
shall be the duty of the commissioners, in designating what money
the said collector shall thus monthly retain, to fix such sum as
will bear the same proportion to his entire salary, that the amount
of taxes collected and reported by him bears to the whole amount
of taxes levied; and upon their final settlement with said collector
it shall be their duty to authorize the payment to the collector of
such balance of his salary as may be due him.
