1804 SOMERSET COUNTY. [ART. 20.

indirectly, or any composition of which such liquors, or any of
them, shall form the chief ingredient, except such as shall be
compounded to be used as a medicine, within the limits of Dame's
Quarter district and St. Peter's district of Somerset county; and
any person violating the provisions of this section shall be deemed
guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction, shall be fined not less
than twenty, nor more than fifty dollars, in the discretion of the
court, for the first offence; and if convicted a second time, shall be
fined not less than fifty, nor more than five hundred dollars, and be
imprisoned for not less than ten nor more than thirty days, in the

discretion of the conrt; and in every subsequent offence, the fine
And imprisonment of the last preceding offence, both as to mini-
mum and maximum, shall be doubled; one-half of which fines
shall go to the informer, and the other half to the State

140. The provisions of the preceding section shall not be con-
strued to apply to sales of liquors for strictly medical or mechan-
ical purposes, cider, beer or home-made wines.

1876, ch. 158.

141. No malt, vinous, spirituous or intoxicating liquors, or
any composition of which malt, spirituous, vinous or intoxicating
liquors form the chief ingredient, shall be sold, directly or
indirectly, or knowingly permitted to be sold, except such as
shall be compounded to be used as a medicine, or for mechanical
purposes, and except home-made wines, home-made cider and
home-made beer, within the limits of Mount Vernon district of
Somerset county, being election district number five of said

county; and any person violating the provisions of this section
shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction shall be
fined not less than twenty nor more than fifty dollars, in the
discretion of the court, for the first offence; and for a second
offence, not less than fifty nor more than five hundred dollars,
and shall be imprisoned, in addition to the fine imposed, not less
than ten nor more than thirty days, in the discretion of the court;
and for every subsequent offence, the fine and imprisonment
affixed to the last preceding offence shall be doubled; and one-
