65. If any person shall buy or sell any articles of provisions
in said town, or within two miles thereof, contrary to the provi-
sions of the preceding section, except at his own residence, he
shall forfeit the sum of five dollars.

66. If any person shall butcher any kind of cattle, sheep or
Logs, in or near the market-house in said town, or shall put any
horse, mare, gelding, cart, wagon or carriage into or under said
market-house, he shall forfeit the sum of two dollars and fifty
cents.

67. The commissioners shall appoint a clerk of the market,
who, before he proceeds to act as such, shall make oath before
them that he will diligently and faithfully, according to the best
of his skill and judgment, perform the duties of his office.

68. Under their direction he may rent the stalls and shambles,
and shall keep an account of the persons renting and of the profits
arising therefrom, and shall render duplicates of said accounts to
the commissioners, on the first Monday of April, annually, or
oftener if required.

69. The said rents and profits shall be paid to the commis-
sioners, to be applied to the repair and improvement of the said
market, and the said clerk shall have a reasonable compensation
for his services, to be fixed by the commissioners.

70. He shall take charge of the market house and market, and
shall examine and inspect the victuals and provisions brought
thereto for sale, and if any shall be found unsound or unwhole-
some, shall seize and destroy the same.

71. He shall examine and try the weight of any butter brought
to the said market, and if short of weight, shall seize and sell the
same at public sale.
