1074 DORCHESTER COUNTY. [ART. 10.

deem wise, equitable and efficient for the comfort, health, conve-
nience and prosperity of said town and its inhabitants; for the
prevention or removal of nuisances, preservation of health and
suppression of vice and immorality within the limits of said town;
and they shall have power to levy every third year, an equal tax
upon the property within the said limits, to such amount as may
from time to time be deemed necessary to accomplish the purposes
aforesaid; provided, however, that the taxes so levied shall not
exceed the sum of forty cents in the hundred dollars for any one
year, which tax shall be collected by a collector appointed for that
purpose, and paid over to the president and board of commissioners.

306. The collector appointed by them shall give bond in the
sum of six hundred dollars for the faithful performance of his
duty; he shall be vested with the same authority for the collection
of town taxes as the several county collectors are now by law
vested with for the collection of State and county taxes; and the
commissioners shall fix the term of office, responsibility and com-
pensation of said collector.

307. They shall not expend nor contract to expend in any one
year, more money than the amount receivable from taxes and other
sources for that year.

308. They shall have power and authority to annually appoint
a bailiff, whose duty it shall be to preserve the peace and good
order of said town, and for this purpose he is invested with
the same powers and authority as any constable now has under
the laws of this State; he shall give bond for the faithful per-
formance of his duty, and shall receive for his services the sum of
forty dollars per annum.

309. They shall have power to straighten and widen streets,
open new streets, make footways or sidewalks, construct bridges,
purchase stone or timber, as they may deem essential to the com-
fort, convenience and prosperity of the town of Vienna, and also
to purchase or condemn a lot of hind adjacent to said town, for
