be subject to the orders of the superintendent, and
shall be discharged by him whenever in his judg-
ment they have ceased to be useful agents of his de-
partment.

6. Said superintendent of labor and agriculture
shall be required to keep in his office a book, in
which he shall cause to be registered the names and
places of residence of such citizens of Maryland as
may desire to obtain the assistance of his depart-
ment in procuring European or other white labor-
ers, together with the number and description of labor-
ers required, and also the nature of the employment
and the rate of wages and other necessary infor-
mation; and the said superintendent shall transmit
from time to time to his agents in Europe a list of

such registered demands for labor, and also of such
lands as may be registered in his office as for rent or
sale, agreeably to the provisions of the first section of
this act, and the said superintendent at home and
his agents abroad shall invite the attention of immi-
grants to the oners extended by our citizens, and when
necessary shall furnish written directions to all appli-
cants for employment or lands, to such places within
the state as may be selected by them.

7. Whenever any citizen of Maryland may desire
to send to the said agent in Bremen or Liverpool a
special requisition for laborers or artizens of any de-
scription, and said citizen shall desire to advance the
money necessary for their transportation, the amount
to be afterwards deducted from their wages, or on any
other stipulated terms he shall enter into obligations
with the said superintendent and in the form to be
presented by him and kept in his office, and the said

superintendent is hereby authorized to contract with
any ship owner or company engaged in the passenger
trade between Baltimore and any European port for
the transportation at a fixed rate, of all such immi-
grants as his agent may desire to send to Maryland, in
