OFFICE OF STATE SUPERINTENDENT.
1865, c. 1 enacts the following

133. The office of the state superintendent of pub-
lic instruction, shall be located in the city of Balti-
more, and the superintendent is authorized to rent
suitable rooms at an annual cost not exceeding four
hundred dollars, and the treasurer on the warrant of
the comptroller, is authorized to pay the same in
quarterly instalments.

134. The sum of fifteen hundred dollars, or so
much thereof as is necessary, is hereby appropriated
to furnish the office of the state superintendent, and
the treasurer, on the warrant of the comptroller, is
authorized to pay the said sum to the superinten-
dent.

135. The state librarian shall furnish for the office
of the state superintendent of public instruction,
copies of the code and laws of subsequent dates, the
constitutions of Maryland, and journals and debates
of the constitutional conventions of 1850 and 1864.

NOTE—See Const 1867, Art VIII, Education, by which it is provided, that the system of
Public Schools as now constituted shall remain in force until the end of the first session of
the (General Assembly after the adoption of the Constitution and shall then expire except so
far as adopted or continued by the General Assembly.

1864, c. 90 enacts the following :

136. The state of Maryland hereby declares its
acceptance of the provisions of an act passed by the
congress of the United States, entitled, an act dona-
ting public lands to the several states and territories
which may provide colleges for the benefit of agricul-
ture and mechanic arts, approved July the second,
eighteen hundred and sixty -two; and the governor
is hereby authorized to give such notice of the said
acceptance as may be proper.
