(c) No commercial motor vehicle shall have a load in excess of seven
hundred (700) pounds per inch in width of tire (measured between the
flanges) for solid tires and at greater width of casing for pneumatic tires.

(d) No commercial motor vehicle shall have an axle load of more than
eighteen thousand (18,000) pounds, except that four (4) wheel vehicles
and semi-trailers equipped with pneumatic tires may have an axle load
of not more than twenty thousand (20,000) pounds. Provided that it
shall be lawful to operate a commercial motor vehicle equipped with three
(3) axles, having each of the rear axles equipped with two hubs, with a
power brake on each rear hub, having a gross weight including vehicle and
load, of not more than forty-two thousand (42,000) pounds.

(e) Trailers equipped with metal tires bearing a gross load in excess
of six thousand (6,000) pounds shall not be allowed on State highways.

(f) Provided nothing hereinabove contained shall make unlawful the
registration or operation upon the highways of this State of any commercial
motor vehicle or passenger bus, now registered in this State, the operation
of which was permissible under the provisions of Section 194 of Article 56
of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1935 Supplement) or Chapter 142
of the Acts of the General Assembly of the first Special Session of 1936.

(g) The service brakes upon any commercial motor vehicle or combina-
tion of vehicles shall be adequate to stop such vehicle or vehicles when
traveling twenty (20) miles per hour within a distance of thirty (30) feet
when upon dry asphalt or concrete pavement surface free from loose ma-
terial where the grade does not exceed one (1 %) per cent.

(h) Under the above conditions the hand brake shall be adequate to
stop such vehicle or vehicles within a distance of fifty-five (55) feet and
said hand brake shall be adequate to hold such vehicle or vehicles stationary
on any grade upon which operated.

(i) All braking distances specified in this section shall apply to all
vehicles mentioned, whether such vehicles are not loaded or are loaded to
the maximum capacity permitted under this Article.

(j) All brakes shall be maintained in good working order and shall be
so adjusted as to operate as equally as practicable with respect to the
wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle.

(2B) The State Roads Commission with respect to highways under its
jurisdiction may by resolution prohibit the operation of vehicles upon
any such highway or impose restrictions as to the weight of vehicles to be
operated upon any such highway, for a total period of not to exceed 90
days in any one calendar year, whenever any said highway by reason of
deterioration, rain, snow, or other climatic conditions will be seriously
damaged or destroyed unless the use of vehicles thereon is prohibited or the
permissible weights thereof reduced.

The State Roads Commission enacting any such resolution shall erect
or cause to be erected and maintained signs designating the provisions of
the ordinance or resolution at each end of that portion of any highway
affected thereby, and the resolution shall not be effective unless and until
such signs are erected and maintained.

(3A) (Weight of Semi-Trailers, Two Wheels Equipped with Rubber
Tires.) Semi-trailers, two wheels equipped with rubber tires, or metal
tired, shall not be operated on any highway of this State with gross weight
exceeding those as set forth in the following classes:

Semi-trailers weighing less than 1,000 pounds shall not have a gross
weight in excess of 5,000 pounds.
