514 ARTICLE 2.

of all such cases and collections from the same; and shall at the first
meeting of the County Commissioners held in each month make a full
and detailed report of all fees charged for, and also all fees received, by
him for the preceding month in all criminal cases; the said statements
and reports to be under oath of the Sheriff, and the said statements and
reports to be accompanied by the Sheriff's check for all of such fees in
criminal cases, collected by him during the preceding month. That the
said Sheriff may retain all civil fees collected by him. The amounts so
charged for expenses of deputies shall be reasonable and shall not exceed
a maximum schedule to be prescribed by the County Commissioners and
filed with the Sheriff. And whenever any Sheriff shall retire from office,
leaving uncollected any costs, fees or charges in civil and criminal cases
lawfully payable to him or his office, it shall be the duty of his successor
to collect and pay over the same in the manner above prescribed; and it
shall be the duty of the Sheriff to keep in his office, in proper books for
the purpose, an official record of the fees and charges to be collected by
him and those which have been so collected, which books shall remain in
his office after the expiration of his term for the use of his successor.

465. For the purpose of verifying and checking up the accounts and
reports of the Sheriff, hereinbefore provided for, it shall be the duty of
the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County, at the end of
every term of said court, to submit to the County Commissioners a list
of all criminal cases of said term where the costs have been adjudged
against the county, together with a statement of said costs, and also a
statement of all fees, in criminal cases, charged or received by the Sheriff
during said term.

466. The Sheriff shall be allowed a warden to the jail to be appointed
by the County Commissioners from whom he shall receive a salary not
exceeding fifty dollars per month to be paid by the County Commisisoners
at their first regular meeting in each month. The Sheriff shall receive an
allowance of not more than twelve dollars per month for wages of the
cook for the prisoners in jail and an allowance of not more than forty
dollars per month for a night watchman for said jail, and he shall be
allowed for his actual expenditures for food, provisions and necessary sup-
plies furnished the prisoners confined in jail, provided the total cost of
the food so furnished shall not exceed the sum of fifty cents per day for
each prisoner so confined and for the warden, the night watchman and
the cook. The Sheriff shall keep an itemized account of all such expendi-
tures, and in the form and system prescribed by the County Commission-
ers, and shall make a report of such expenditures according to such form
and system to the County Commissioners at their first meeting in every
month, accompanied by a statement showing the actual number of prison-
ers daily supplied during such period; and the County Commissioners
