compiling and printing such Code, which when adopted shall be proof of
the law and ordinances of Salisbury therein contained.
And the Clerk of Salisbury shall deliver to the Public* Justice a certi-
fied copy of all ordinances for the violation of which the said Police Justice
may impose a fine or imprisonment, or both, or other punishment. And
the said Police Justice shall take judicial notice of all ordinances, so cer-
tified to him, and of the due passage thereof.

273. Neither the Mayor nor any Councilman shall enter into or make
any contract for doing work or furnishing any supplies or materials for
the said city, nor shall they or any of them in any manner participate in
the profits of any contract made by or entered into by them for said city
with any person, firm or corporation whatsoever; provided, this section
shall not apply to any stockholder or stockholders of a corporation not an
officer of such corporation. And said contract shall be null and void and
not recoverable at law.

274. The Mayor after the annual election and qualification of the
newly elected members of the City Council, at its first regular meeting,
shall appoint, subject to confirmation by a majority of the council, not
more than ten persons as policemen, one of the Justices of the Peace of
Wicomico County, as Police Justice; one person, who must be a regis-
tered physician and in good standing as "Health Officer"; one person as
"Building Inspector," and one person, who shall have had such previous
education as is generally required for the degree of B. S. C. E., as "City
Engineer."
Each of the above officers shall hold office for one year from the date of
appointment and until his successor is appointed, confirmed and qualified.
The duties and compensation of these officials shall be such as are pre-
scribed by law and by ordinance or resolution of the Mayor and Council
from time to time.
And said police officers may be suspended without pay for a period not
exceeding thirty days or reprimanded by the Mayor for neglect, non-per-
formance of duty or other good cause, and all of said officers shall be sub-
ject to removal as provided by Section 278.

275. The time of the appointment of the several officers mentioned in
the preceding section the Mayor shall appoint, subject to confirmation by
the Council, an attorney to the Mayor and Council, to be known as the
"City Solicitor." He shall be a member of the bar of the Circuit Court
for Wicomico County, who has resided and practiced his profession in the
City of Salisbury for not less than one year immediately preceding his
appointment, and he shall receive a salary of four hundred dollars per
