of gutters until the corporation shall be ready to grade and macadamize
the street when such work is required to be done.

840. The Burgess and Commissioners may level, grade and macadam-
ize the streets and alleys or any of them, in whole or in part, and cause
bridges or culverts to be made over the water courses or hollows in said
streets or alleys and crossing places of stone or otherwise at convenient
points over the same; they shall have exclusive jurisdiction over the streets
and alleys in said town, to keep the same in repair and in a cleanly con-
dition at all times; may provide a judicious system for lighting the same,
and make all or any changes or improvements thereon as shall inure to
the public convenience and benefit, within the means authorized and pre-
scribed by the charter.

841. The said Burgess and Commissioners shall have power to compel
all turnpike companies whose roads or any part thereof lie within the
limits of the town, to perform all the duties and obligations imposed upon
them by their respective charters or the laws of the State, upon such parts
thereof as are within the limits of the town; and shall have power to enter
into arrangements with the said turnpike companies in relation to the
grading and paving and repairing of the parts of their respective roads
lying within the limits of the town.

842. The several turnpike companies owning roads running into the
town may cede to the town such parts of their roads as lie within the limits
of the town upon such terms as may be agreed upon between the Burgess
and Commissioners and said companies, and the same when ceded shall in
all respects be subject to the same regulations as the public streets of the
town.

843. The said Burgess and Commissioners shall have power to appoint
one of their number treasurer of said corporation, who shall be the cus-
todian of the corporate funds, and assign his duties and responsibilities;
before entering upon his duty he shall be required to give bond and secu-
rity for such amount as may be deemed adequate and approved by the
board; and said treasurer at the close of each year shall make an itemized
account of the receipts and expenditures of said corporation during said
year, also a statement of all the outstanding debts of the said corporation,
which shall be printed and publicly put up at the place of holding the
town election for the ensuing year.
