feet to stone "S. B. No. 18"; thence north seventy-five degrees east four
hundred and twenty-four and one-half feet to stone "S. B. No. 19"; thence
north fourteen degrees west 'three hundred and fifty-seven feet to stone
"S. B. No. 20"; thence north sixty-nine degrees east nine hundred and
ninety feet to the place of beginning, stone "S. B. No. 1"; provided, how-
ever, that for sanitary and police purposes the burgess and commissioners
shall have and exercise full power and control for a distance of one-half
mile in every direction from said limits.

728. All citizens of the State of Maryland, entitled to right of fran-
chise therein and who have resided within the corporate limits of the town
of Sharpsburg six months next preceding an election shall be entitled to
vote at said election and all subsequent elections. And shall be qualified
to hold office, either elective or appointive provided they have so resided
in said town five years previous to any election. And the said voters shall
on the first Monday of September, A. D. 1922, and upon the same day in
every alternate year thereafter, elect by ballot one citizen for Burgess and
one citizen for Assistant Burgess of said town, both of whom shall be citi-
zens of the United States and five years residents of said town next preced-
ing the election, and at least twenty-five years of age; they shall take the
oath of office as hereinafter prescribed for town officers, and remain in
office until their successors are elected and qualified.

729. In case of a vacancy in the office of Burgess, by death or other-
wise, the assistant Burgess shall hold the office of Burgess during the unex-
pired term, after taking the oath of office as required of the Burgess; and
the Commissioners shall elect a successor to fill the unexpired term of the
assistant Burgess by a majority vote of their number. The person so
elected shall, within three days, qualify as hereinafter provided; and if
such person shall fail to so qualify another election shall be held, and so
on until the vacancy is filled.

730. The Burgess shall preside at all meetings of the board, and in
case of a tie shall have the deciding vote; he shall see that the ordinances
are faithfully executed, and for his services shall receive an annual salary
of ten dollars. In the absence of the Burgess, the assistant Burgess shall
assume the duties of the Burgess; he shall, in all cases, have the same vote
as a Commissioner, except when acting as Burgess.

731. At the same time and in the same manner as provided for the
election of Burgess and assistant Burgess, there shall be elected five Com-
missioners, whose qualification shall be the same as those of the Burgess
