594. The said burgess and commissioners may collect the amount
assessed against the persons benefited by the opening of streets, lanes and
alleys in the same manner as taxes in said town are now collected, and the
amount, when collected, shall be applied to the payment of the damages
and other expenses incurred in opening the said streets, lanes or alleys.

595. They shall not levy any general tax for levelling or laying pave-
ments in front of any house or improved lands within the limits of the
corporation, but may levy a general tax for the purpose of making or keep-
ing in repair stepping-stones and crossings, and fixing and repairing all
public alleys; and, provided a majority vote be first had in accordance
with the ordinances of said corporation, may levy a general tax for the
erection of a building, or the purchase of some suitable place for a lockup;
for the building of footways or bridges over the waters of the town; for
the erection of street lamps; for the building of a town hall; for the grad-
ing of all new streets; and for making pavements along unimproved lands
or water, and for any other public improvements.

596. The Burgess and Commissioners of Keedysville shall have power
to pass all ordinances for the good government of the town, to prevent,
remove and abate all nuisances or obstructions in or upon the streets, high-
ways, lanes, alleys, drains or water courses, or in and upon any lot adja-
cent thereto, and to provide for imposing a fine on any person causing or
creating any such nuisance or obstruction, to remove or cause to be re-
moved at the expense of the owner, any houses or other structures that
may be dangerous to persons passing along and over any of the highways
of the town, to make reasonable regulations in regard to buildings to be
erected in said town, and to grant building permits for the same, to cause
the water courses, drains or sewers of the town to be repaired and kept
clean, to grant licenses for the sale of marketable commodities, to control
and protect the public grounds and property of the town, to suppress
vagrancy, to prohibit or restrain the keeping of bawdy houses or houses
of ill-fame within the limits of the town, and to provide for the punish-
ment of all persons who shall keep, authorize or suffer to be kept, any
such bawdy house of house of ill-fame, to regulate and provide for the
issuing of licenses or permits for all hawking, peddling and vending of
wares and merchandise of every description upon the streets and high-
ways of the town, to issue licenses or permits to all itinerant peddlers who
may go from house to house to vend or sell wares and merchandise, to
issue licenses for any and all persons entering into or beginning transient
business in said town for the sale of goods, wares or merchandise, to regu-
