that the Tax Collector shall remain in office until his successor is duly
appointed and qualified as other town officials; and any tax collector who
shall violate the provisions of this section shall be liable to indictment in
the Circuit Court for Washington County, and upon conviction shall be
fined or imprisoned or both at the discretion of the Court.*

322. Accounts for expenditures for street and lighting purposes and
police, shall be first passed by the board of street commissioners, and
warrants for the same shall be drawn on the tax collector, signed by the
president of the board and attested by the clerk; all appropriations for
expenditures other than for street and lighting purposes and police, shall
be passed and approved by the mayor and council, and warrants for the
same drawn on the tax collector, to be signed by the mayor and attested
by the clerk.

323. No warrant shall be drawn on any tax collector after his suc-
cessor shall have qualified; but all money in the hands of the retiring col-
lector shall be immediately paid over by him to the succeeding tax col-
lector, after such succeeding tax collector shall have qualified, who shall
receive and credit the same to the several accounts for which it has been
collected; and the retiring collector shall collect the unpaid taxes due for
the year of his appointment, and pay the same as collected to the then
incumbent tax collector, who shall receive and credit the same to the
several accounts for which they were levied.

324. The market inspector shall have charge of the public markets,
and shall perform such duties as may be prescribed by ordinance; he shall
give bond to the mayor and council, to be approved by them, for the faith-
ful discharge of his duties, in such penalty as the mayor and council may
require, and receive such compensation for his services as they may deter-
mine.

325. The mayor and council shall fix the salaries of other officers of the
town, and shall exact bonds to the town in such penalty as they may deem
right, for the faithful and proper performance of the duties imposed upon
them by law and the ordinances of the town.

326. The Mayor and Council shall have power to town; + to prevent,
