BAILIFFS

544. The chief bailiff shall attend the meetings of the Mayor and Com-
mon Council and he and all other bailiffs shall perform such other duties
as they shall direct, shall preserve the peace and good order of the town,
and for this purpose are vested with the same power and authority as any
constable now has under the laws of the State

545. The Mayor and Common Council shall not expend or contract to
expend in any one fiscal year more money than the amount receivable from
taxes and other sources during the year, except as provided in Section 517,
and provided, however, that the present Mayor and Common Council may
authorize the obligations of the town to be issued to an amount not exceed-
ing two thousand dollais, and payable and renewable at such times as may
be agreed upon by said Mayor and Common Council or the council, pro-
vided for by this act, to the extent of not exceeding two thousand dollars,
to cover existing deficiencies in the town revenue, and may also purchase
on installments, to be agreed upon by the Mayor and Common Council
and the vendois, meters necessary to legulate the flow of water to each con-
sumer, the indebtedness therefor not to exceed three thousand dollars

ROAD TAX

546. The commissioners for the county, justices of the peace, sheriff,
constables and all the county and State officers shall have, hold and exer-
cise their office and jurisdiction in the said town The said Commissioners
in Prince Geoige's County shall appropriate annually three quarters of
the full amount of road tax levied or imposed upon the assessable prop-
erty within the corporate limits of the town, and shall order the collector,
who shall collect all taxes within said corporate limits, to pay said three-
quarters of the load taxes to the Mayor and Common Council of said town
for the improvement exclusively of the streets and loads within the cor-
porate limits of the town

547. The Mayor and Common Council may, by ordinance, provide for
the codification of all ordinances which have been or may be passed by it,
and for the printing of such codification thereof, and the printed ordi-
