INCORPORATION AND BOUNDARIES.
1922, ch. 96, sec. 1.
1. The inhabitants of the City of Cumberland, in Allegany County,
are a corporation by the name of the Mayor and City Council of Cumber-
land, and by that name may sue, and be sued, may have and use a com-
mon seal, which may be altered at pleasure, and may purchase and hold
real, personal or mixed property, or dispose of the same for the benefit
of said city; provided, that the purchase or alienation of such real estate,
when the value thereof shall exceed the sum of ten thousand dollars, shall
be first submitted to the voters of the city, either at a general election for
members of the City Council after twenty days' public notice by handbills,
or otherwise in their discretion, or at a special election to be ordered by
the said Mayor and City Council to be held under an ordinance for such
purpose, made and passed after twenty days' public notice thereof, as above
provided, stating specifically the object of such election, and provided a
majority of the legal voters voting thereat assent to the same.
*The Charter of the City of Cumberland was formerly codified as part of Article
1, but ch. 96, 1922, provided for its codification as Article 1A.
1914, ch. 702, authorized city to close Water Street. 1914, ch. 71, authorized city
to close King Street. 1920, ch. 20, authorized city to close Primrose Alley.
