DORCHESTER COUNTY. 2179

ordinance wherein the erection of buildings of wood are forbidden, and
for taking down and removing any buildings erected without a permit first
had and obtained from the Commissioners; to provide for the establish-
ment of a building line for the erection of buildings on the streets, lanes
and alleys and thoroughfares of said town; to order the taking down and
removal of any building or house deemed dangerous and unsafe and to
direct the taking down of the same without delay; to prevent and regulate
the storage of gun-powder, oil or other combustible matter in such quanti-
ties and in such places as they may deem proper; to prevent obstructions on
the streets, lanes, alleys and highways of said city; to regulate the width of
tires of all heavy vehicles used upon the streets, lanes or alleys of said city;
to license carts, wagons, carriages and other vehicles used for transporting
goods for sale or hire, or persons for hire, and to provide and regulate
the numbering of same; to regulate the speed of horses, wheeled vehicles,
automobiles, cars and locomotives in the city limits; to regulate the erec-
tion and maintenance of proper safety appliances by railroads at street
crossings; to regulate and license all pawnbrokers, junk dealers, fire and
slaughter sales, auction sales, peddlers of nostrums, remedies, medicines,
notions and other goods, patent, secret or pretended inventions; to regulate
and license all nine and ten pin alleys, bowling alleys, pool rooms, skating
rinks, theatres, moving picture shows, boxing and sparring matches and
wrestling contests, and all shows and exhibitions of every kind; to provide
for the restraining of theatricals or other public amusements within the
said city; to regulate and prohibit the running or landing of excursions
to or in said town; to provide for, require and regulate the construction
and maintenance of exits and fire escapes from places of amusement and
all public buildings; to prevent gambling and games of chance; to regulate
the use of sidewalks and all structures in, under or above the same, and
to require the owner or occupant of premises to keep the sidewalks in front
of same and the gutters thereof free from snow and other obstructions, and
to prescribe hours for cleaning same; to regulate and prevent the throwing
of sweepings, dust, ashes, offal, garbage, paper, hand-bills, dirty liquids or
any other material into any street, alley or public places or on any vacant
lot in said city; to regulate and prevent the use of streets, sidewalks and
public places for signs, sign-posts, awnings, awning-posts, poles, horse-
troughs, steps, railings, entrances, areaways or any other obstruction, or
posting hand-bills and advertisements and display of goods, wares and -
merchandise and to provide for and enforce the removal of any such that
are now erected, planted and being; to grant franchises for and regulate the
putting of sewers or drains on or under its streets or alleys, and the charges
for tapping or entering the same, whether such entrances were made before
or after the passage of this Act; provided, that persons having paid for en-
tering any such sewer before the passage of this Act shall not be required to
pay an additional sum or charge for tapping or entering the same; to open,
have opened, build or construct, to enclose, to keep open, to regulate and to
keep in repair all necessary and useful drains and sewers, and to demand
and obtain for the bailiff, employees, workmen and laborers in the services
