1798 ARTICLE 7.

1906, ch. 785, sec. 6.

238. For the purpose of carrying out the powers granted by this Act,
and to preserve the cleanliness, health, peace and good order of said town
and the community, the said Mayor and Council may impose such fines,
not exceeding twenty dollars in any one case, for each violation of any
ordinance or any section of any ordinance passed under the provisions of
this Act or by authority thereof, and in default of payment of any fine
imposed or the costs incurred in connection therewith they may provide
for the imprisonment of the offender for a period not exceeding thirty
days, or until the fine and costs are paid.

239. It shall be the duty of the County Commissioners of Carroll
County to pay annually to the Mayor and Council of Mount Airy, one-
half the amount of taxes levied and collected annually by said County
Commissioners for road purposes, upon the assessable property liable to
taxation within the limits of the town of Mount Airy, to be appropriated
and used by the said Mayor and Council of Mount Airy, for the repair,
maintenance and improvement of the streets and roads within the limits
of said town, and within the borders of Carroll County so graded and
macadamized as aforesaid.

WATER AND LIGHT PLANT.

1914, ch. 521, sec. 1.

240. The Mayor and Council of Mount Airy are hereby authorized
and empowered to construct, erect, own and operate a Water and Electric
Light and Power plant in the said town of Mount Airy for the purpose
of storing and supplying water for fire protection and municipal and
private purposes and for lighting the public streets, lanes, .alleys and public
and private buildings of said town of Mount Airy, and for that purpose
are hereby authorized and empowered to issue bonds in the name of said
municipal corporation to an amount not exceeding twenty thousand
dollars, in denominations of one hundred dollars, five hundred dollars
and one thousand dollars, each, as said Mayor and Council of Mount
Airy shall determine, and each of said bonds shall be payable twenty
years after date to bearer, redeemable, however, at the pleasure of said
Mayor and Council of Mount Airy at any time after the expiration of five
years from their respective dates, and shall bear interest in the meantime
at the rate of five per centum per annum, payable semi-annually, according
to the tenor of the coupons for said interest to be attached to said bonds,
which said bonds shall be sealed with the corporate seal of said municipal
corporation, and, together with said coupons shall be signed by the
Mayor and countersigned by the clerk or register of said town; provided,
however, that said bonds shall not be sold for less than par or the face
value thereof in cash current money.
