may be directed by the convening authority. At least two weeks' notice
of the date of the sitting shall be given all officers ordered to appear for
examination. Within twenty days after such examination said boards
shall make a detailed report of their results to the Governor as Com-
mander-in-Chief, and anyone failing to pass such an examination shall
not be eligible for a commission in the National Guard of this State, or
for promotion therein, for the period of one year from the date of such
failure except upon the recommendation of the commanding officer of
the regiment, or separate organization, as the case may be. The Gover-
nor as Commander-in-Chief may allow an examination to any officer
who shall give him a satisfactory excuse for not appearing before said
Board when first ordered. The Board so appointed shall be named for
a specified term of service. The members of said Board, other than
the recorder, shall be paid the sum of $100.00 each per annum for all
services in connection with such Board, and the recorder thereof shall
be paid the sum of $200.00 per annum for all services in connection
with said Board.

25. Every officer duly commissioned shall, within ten days after his
commission is tendered him, or within ten days after he shall have been
notified personally or by mail that the same is held in readiness for him
by a superior officer, take and subscribe to the oath of office required by
the laws of this State and of the United States. Such oath shall be
taken and subscribed to before an officer authorized by law to admin-
ister an oath, or some general or field officer who has taken the oath
himself and who is hereby authorized to administer the same. In case
of neglect or refusal to take and subscribe to such oath within the time
mentioned, such commission shall be cancelled by the Governor and a
new appointment shall be made.

26. Officers shall take rank from the date of commissions; an officer
who has served in the same grade continuously, upon re-appointment,
shall take rank from the date of his first commission in the grade.

27. The duties assigned to an officer by title in this Article shall
devolve, in case of absence or disability to command of the officer named,
upon the line officer next in rank, except as otherwise provided in this
Article.

28. A commissioned officer shall not be removed from office without
Ms consent, except by the sentence of a general court-martial or as pro-
vided in this Article.
