city, as the case may be; and every register shall renew his bond on
or before the thirty-first day of December in every second year.

The register's bond is liable for collateral inheritance taxes, and taxes on
commissions. Banks v. State. 60 Md. 309.

and 101.

As to the fees chargeable by a register of wills, see art. 36, sec. 27.

264. On default of any register of wills to execute the bond
required by the preceding section within the time therein prescribed,
he shall be subject to a penalty of one thousand dollars to be recovered
by indictment in the name of the State in the circuit court for the
county in which he shall reside; or, if he reside in the city of Balti-
more, by indictment in the criminal court of Baltimore.

265. It shall be the duty of each register of wills to transmit to the
governor, on the first Monday of October next after the execution of
said bond, a certified copy thereof.

266. Each register shall diligently attend each meeting of the
orphans' court in his county or city, and under their direction make
full and fair entries of their proceedings, and also make a fair record
in a strong bound book or books, of all wills proved before him or the
said court, or authenticated according to law, and of all other matters
by law directed to be recorded in the said court or in his office; he
shall make out and issue every summons, process, or order of the court
and shall in every respect act under their control and direction as the
clerk of a court of law is under the direction of such court of law; and
he shall give out and certify under the seal of the court any copy of
any part of the proceedings in the court or in his office which any
person may demand, and he shall be entitled to payment for any service
done by him according to the table of fees now or hereafter settled by
law.

This section referred to in deciding that a verbal order of court authoriz-
ing an investment, is not sufficient under section 242. Carlysle v. Carlysle,
10 Md. 448.

An administration account is required to be recorded by this section.

267. Each register of wills in this State shall be required to keep
a proper docket showing the grant of letters testamentary or of admin-
istration and a short entry of every paper or proceedings filed in the
