priation made by the Legislature, upon the warrant of the adjutant
general, under and by direction of the governor and commander-in-
chief.

17. The Maryland national guard shall consist of a brigadier gen-
eral, an adjutant general's department, an inspector general's depart-
ment, a judge advocate general's department, an ordnance department,
a quartermaster's department, a subsistence department, a pay depart-
ment, a medical department, a corps of engineers, a signal corps, a
hospital corps and a coast artillery corps, the existing military organ-
izations and the naval brigade as herein organized, and such others as
may be organized hereafter, and such persons as may be enlisted or com-
missioned therein. The military organizations of the national guard
shall constitute a brigade and a naval brigade, and the present regi-
ments, troops, companies and divisions, and shall remain as now estab-
lished; and the governor shall at any time have power to change the
organization of regiments, battalions, troops, companies and divisions
so as to conform to any organization, system of drill or instruction, now
or hereafter adopted by the army or navy of the United States; and
for that purpose the number of officers and enlisted men of any grade in
regiments, battalions, troops, companies and divisions may be increased
to the extent made necessary by the new positions thus created. The
governor shall have power, in case of war, insurrection, invasion or
imminent danger thereof to increase the force beyond the maximum and
organize the same with proper officers, as the exigencies of the service
may require.

18. The units of the national guard shall be composed and organized
as follows:

1. A company shall consist of:
1 Captain.
1 First Lieutenant.
1 Second Lieutenant.
1 First Sergeant.
1 Quartermaster sergeant.
4 Sergeants.
6 Corporals.
2 Cooks.
2 Musicians.
42 Privates.
58 total enlisted (minimum).

The maximum enlisted strength of a company may be as high
as 150.

2. A Battalion of Infantry shall consist of:
1 Major.
1 Adjutant (First Lieutenant).
