While the events just narrated were transpiring on General Lee's right, others
of no less importance were taking place on his left. Grant had evidently begun to
appreciate the fact that Lee's army was numerically much inferior to his own, and
stung to the quick at the many repulses he had met with since he crossed the
Rapidan, he determined upon a more aggressive course. His successes at
Peebles' farm and Squirrel Level road had convinced him that lie should avail
