130 court of appeals of maryland
Chief Judge Buchanan. A minute of more than
commonplace impressiveness was made on the
death of the clerk, Thomas Harris, on June 25,
1829. He had attended court as usual on the
day before, and the minutes of that day are in his
hand, but seemingly in not so vigorous a hand as
he usually wrote. The next morning he was
found dead in bed, at his house on West Street;
and at the opening of court the Attorney General,
Taney, announced the death, and an adjournment
was taken until July 21, 1829. A meeting of the
bar was held on the same day, with Taney in the
chair, and Jonathan Meredith acting as secretary,
to pass resolutions. Bench and bar attended the
funeral, and thereafter wore "the usual badges of
mourning", crepe on the left arm.
