BATTERY B, LIGHT ARTILLERY [1st], "SNOW'S.

BATTERY B, Maryland Light Artillery, was organized at Baltimore

and Pikesville, Md., in September and October, 1861, to serve
three years. On the expiration of its term of service, the original
members (except veterans) were mustered out of service, and the
organization, composed of veterans and recruits, retained in ser-
vice until July 3, 1865, when it was mustered out of service, in
accordance with orders from the War Department.

Battery B was originally a part of the Purnell Legion.

Battery B was sent to the eastern shore of Virginia in the latter part of the year
of 1861, where it performed efficient service.

In the summer of 1862, Battery B was sent to the Army of the Potomac, then on
the Chickahominy.

At the battle of New Bridge, Va., June 5, 1862, Battery B was conspicuous for its
gallantry and efficiency. At the battle of Malvern Hill, Va., July 1, 1862, Battery B
took a conspicuous part.

At the battle of Antietam, Battery B took position on the right of the line and
rendered valuable service.

Battery B was assigned to duty in the department of Western Virginia, in the spring
of 1863, and fought with Sigel's Army at New Market, Va., May 18, 1864.

Battery B moved up the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with General David M.
Hunter's Army and took part in the battle of Piedmont, Va., June 5, 1864; from thence,
with Hunter's Army, Battery B proceeded to Lynchburg, Va., on the James, and, upon
the arrival of reinforcements from Lee's Army and the retirement of General Hunter's
Army via the Kanawha Valley to the Ohio River, Battery B shared all the hardships
incident to the retreat through the mountains of West Virginia.
Battery B had a fine record for bravery and efficiency.

The following are the casualties from death in Battery B, viz.: Killed in battle,
five (5) enlisted men; died of wounds, disease, etc., twenty-seven (27) enlisted men;
total, thirty-two (32).

Battery B participated in the following engagements, viz.: New Bridge, Va., June
5, 1862 ; Malvern Hill, Va., July 1,1862 ; Antietam, Md., September 17,1862 ; Fredericks-
burg, Va., December 13, 1862 ; New Market, Va., May 15, 1864 ; Piedmont, Va., June 5,
1864 ; Lynchburg, Va., June 18, 1864 j near Salem, Va., June 21, 1864.
