BALTIMORE OR DIX LIGHT INFANTRY.

THE command known as the Baltimore or Dix Light Infantry,
consisting of five companies of infantry,, was organized at Bal-
timore. Maryland, in November and December, 1861, to serve

was contemplated to increase this command to a full regi-
ment of picked men, under the supervision of General John A

Dix, then in command of the Department of Maryland.
The project did not meet with the response anticipated, and the original five
companies were consolidated into two companies and transferred May 24, 1862, to
the 3d Regiment of Infantry, Maryland Volunteers. This consolidation and transfer
necessitated the discharge of all the field and company officers, save and except the
complement of officers necessary for the two companies transferred.
