THE Third Regiment Infantry Potomac Home Brigade, with the
exception of Companies I and K, was organized at Cumberland,
Hagerstown and Baltimore, Maryland, from October 31,1861, to

The two companies known as I and K were recruited at Elli-
cott's Mills and Monrovia, Md., in April and May, 1864, to serve
three years, and assigne.d to this regiment.
The original members (except veterans) were mustered out as their terms of service
expired, and the organization, composed of veterans and recruits, retained in the service
until May 29,1865, when it was mustered out of the military service of the United States
in accordance with orders from the War Department.

Companies A, B, C, D and H were recruited in Allegany County, Md., Company
E at Hagerstown, Company F at Baltimore, and Company G in Frederick County; Com-
pany I in Howard County and Company K in Frederick County.

Soon after the organization of 1st Battalion of this regiment at Cumberland, they
were assigned to duty on the upper Potomac, in Maryland and Virginia, serving in
Lander's Division until March 11, 1862.

Then they were assigned to the Mountain Department until June 26, 1862. Whilst
serving in this department the 3d Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry were
engaged with the enemy at Franklin and Wardensville, Va,, in May, 1862, and at
Moorefield, Va., in June, 1862.

The 3d Regiment of Potomac Home Brigade Infantry was transferred to the Middle
Department in June, 1862, and on September 13, 1862, formed a part of the beleaguered
garrison at Harper's Ferry, Va., and were actively engaged during all the fighting inci-
dent to the siege on the 13th, 14th and 15th days of September, 1862, both on Maryland
Heights, Md., and Bolivar Heights, Va.

The 3d Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry was surrendered with the garri-
son and paroled when duly exchanged. They were assigned to duty guarding the line
of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

On the invasion of Maryland by General Early's Confederate Army in July, 1864,
the 3d Regiment Potomac Home Brigade Infantry confronted their advance, and had a
lively and gallant skirmish with the enemy to the west of Frederick City, Md., July 7th
and 8th, 1864, and took a conspicuous part with General Lew Wallace's little army at
the battle of Monocacy, July 9, 1864, where this small army was ordered to give battle
to overwhelming force of the enemy, in order to enable reinforcements to reach and pro
tect the Capitol at Washington.
