Capital Activity

Both Baltimore-Washington International Airport and the Port of Baltimore are building
for even better days ahead.

Aside from a runway extension completed during fall, 1994, the Maryland Aviation
Administration and its contractors are racing to finish a variety of construction projects
designed to help growing passenger traffic at BWI, including:
a $27.6 million pier expansion during 1995

an aircraft de-icing facility during 1995

a terminal roadway by 1996

road construction to ease traffic and pave the way for light rail service by 1997

a new $177 million international terminal to handle the growing trend in over-
seas travel by 1997

Important developments at the Port of Baltimore include:

Seagirt Terminal's $250 million Intermodal Container Transfer Facility which
provides an unparalleled array of technology to port customers

$8.5 million for new and upgraded cranes at the Dundalk Marine Terminal to
increase productivity

a $600,000 state investment in a public-private project to develop a new comput-
erized gate complex at South Locust Point for automated delivery and pickup
operations

nearly $227 million in state and federal dollars spent to deepen the channel to 50
feet, allowing ships to haul increased tonnage directly from terminals,

"...(Maryland's) unemployment
rates are consistently below
national levels..."
