The fourth USS Maryland
he high-tech, nuclear-powered USS Maryland
submarine began service in the midst of rapidly
changing political and military realities
throughout the world. Commissioned on
June 13,1992, in New London, Connecti-
cut as the 13th in the Ohio Class of Trident
submarines, the new Maryland is the largest
and most powerful ever built in the free world.
She is also the fourth naval vessel to be named after the
state of Maryland.
Constructed by General Dynamics, the 560-foot vessel
features an advanced sonar system, improved design, and
quieter machinery than earlier classes. Its insignia reflects
elements of the state's flag - derived from the quartered
arms of the Calvert and Grassland families who founded
the Maryland colony - and the seven battle stars earned by
the battleship Maryland.
