Location and Size
Maryland is located on the East Coast in the South Atlantic Census Region and is bordered by the States of Delaware,
Pennsylvania, West Virginia. Virginia and the District of Columbia. Maryland encompasses a geographic area of 12,303 square
miles and ranks 42nd among the fifty states in size. Maryland's land area (exclusive of inland waterways and the 1,726 square
miles of the Chesapeake Bay) is 9,874 square miles.
Population
Maryland's population is concentrated in urban areas, the seven counties and Baltimore City located in the Baltimore and
Washington corridor containing 31.7% of the State's land area and 82.2% of the population.* The estimated 1980 population for
the Baltimore SMSA was 2.174,023 and for the Maryland portion of the Washington SMSA was 1,316,875. Overall, Maryland's
population per square mile in 1980 was 427.0. making Maryland the fifth most densely populated state in the Union.** The
